The Top Star-Rated Golf Resorts On The PGA Tour

As a golf fan, there?s just something special about witnessing a PGA tournament in person instead of on your flat screen. So why not stay at the host resort to really revel in the excitement? There are several Forbes Travel Guide Four- and Five-star hotels that hold pro golf events throughout the year (The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua recently held the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January) and if you plan ahead, you can book a room here, too. Here are five star-rated resorts hosting upcoming tournaments on the prestigious 2012 PGA Tour.

RBC Heritage: April 9-15, Hilton Head, S.C.

You won?t be able to get a room at Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Inn at Harbour Town (which sits on the first hole of Harbour Town Golf Links) for this year?s RBC Heritage tournament?it?s completely sold out. But the Hilton Head resort is also home to villas that range from one to four bedrooms as well as supersized vacation homes. Recently voted a favorite course by PGA Tour players (second only to Augusta National), the championship golf course plays host to the first tourney that follows the grueling Masters. The RBC Heritage has been played here since 1969 when Arnold Palmer claimed victory, and the exclusive area offers plenty of entertainment in addition to the golf?spectators tend to gravitate toward the Harbour Town Yacht Basin for evening entertainment.

HP Byron Nelson Championship: May 17-20, Dallas, Texas

One of the longest-running tournaments on the PGA Tour tees off at Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. Book a room at the Four-Star resort for easy access to watch top players battle it out on the par-70 TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas. The 400-acre property?s cozy country club feel and its prime location (just 15 minutes from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport) make it an ideal spot for golf pros and their fans. When you need a break from the links, hit one of the resort?s four pools or book a treatment at the Four-Star spa.

The Greenbrier Classic: July 5-8, White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.

The crown jewel of West Virginia is hosting The Greenbrier Classic for the third year in a row?The Greenbrier resort will welcome the pros on its historic par-70 course, The Old White TPC. This tourney offers something many on the PGA Tour don?t?live entertainment between events (Toby Keith, Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie and Bon Jovi will all hit the stage). The rural West Virginia resort also has numerous restaurants, a Five-Star spa and more than enough activities (falconry, skeet shooting, tennis and a casino) to keep you occupied during tournament downtime.

PGA Championship: Aug. 9-12, Kiawah Island, S.C.

It was only a matter of time before the PGA Championship made its way to Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which boasts one of the most difficult courses in the country. The Ocean Course hosted the Ryder Cup in 1991 and is finally getting its shot at a major championship. Ten of the 18 holes line the Atlantic, creating a course that is both memorable and extremely testing?shifting winds cause players to experiment with different clubs. The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort has Five-Star accommodations, a Five-Star spa and Four-Star restaurant The Ocean Room (go here for steaks and lobster bisque).

McGladrey Classic: Oct. 18-21, St. Simons Island, Ga.

Sea Island Resort has three outstanding golf courses and two Five-Star hotels? The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club and The Cloister. The McGladrey Classic will take place on the Seaside Course, where many say its ocean views and salt marshes are reminiscent of legendary St. Andrews in Scotland. The course wraps around the southernmost tip of St. Simons Island, elevating the importance of shot selection, recovery and putting during the game. Sea Island is loaded with non-golf related activities (horseback riding, tennis, sunbathing at the beach) but we recommend a trip to The Cloister Spa, a Five-Star facility with unique garden and water atriums as well as top-notch treatments to help you unwind.
