BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria has a long and tumultuous history of meddling into Lebanese affairs. For much of the past 30 years, the seven-times-smaller Lebanon has lived under Syrian military and political domination. Damascus has often stirred tensions within Lebanon's explosive sectarian mix of Christians and Muslims to advance its regional interests, including during the country's 15-year civil war that ended in 1990. Syria's powerful allies in Lebanon include the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Important milestones affecting the Syria-Lebanon relationship:

SYRIA'S CIVIL WAR: Since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in February 2011, Lebanon has been steadily drawn into the unrest ? a troubling sign for the country with political parties rooted in various Christian and Muslim sects, many of which are armed. While Syria's revolt has intensified between predominantly Sunni rebels and Assad's regime ? dominated by Alawites, an offshoot Shiite group ? Lebanon has seen a steady flow of refugees from Syria, with frequent street clashes along its northern border. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who heads a government dominated by Hezbollah and other pro-Syrian groups, has led a policy of "disassociation" from its influential neighbor. Damascus has accused Sunni groups in Lebanon of supporting rebels by trying to establish a supply line to anti-regime fighters across Lebanon's northern border.

Tensions between Beirut and Damascus deepened in August, after an arrest of former Lebanese Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon. A senior Lebanese police official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said Samaha confessed to having personally transported explosives in his car from Syria to Lebanon to kill Lebanese. A military court indicted Samaha; Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, a close aide of Assad, was indicted in absentia on charges of furnishing the explosives.

___

POLITICAL ASSASSINATIONS: Political assassinations in Lebanon have occurred with impunity for decades, and Syria has been blamed for many of the killings. In 2005, Syria was widely accused of involvement in the killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a wealthy businessman and an influential Sunni politician. Hariri was hailed in Lebanon for rebuilding Beirut after the 15-year civil war. Following his death in a car bomb explosion, Damascus was forced to withdraw its troops and Syria's grip in Lebanon began to slip. The U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon has indicted four Hezbollah members as suspects in the Hariri assassination. Hezbollah denies involvement in Hariri's killing and has refused to extradite the suspects.

Many Lebanese residents accused Assad's regime of being behind Friday's assassination of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, a Sunni, who headed the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces that has been probing the assassination plot against Hariri. Al-Hassan and his agents have been credited with identifying Samaha, the former information minister, as Syria's link to Lebanon. Damascus has condemned the bombing.

___

HEZBOLLAH: The Iran-backed Hezbollah has been Syria's most powerful ally in Lebanon, particularly since Damascus ended its military presence in Lebanon seven years ago. The Shiite militant group has dominated Lebanese politics for more than a decade and is now in control of the government. In 2006, Hezbollah gained support from Sunnis and Christians during a 34-day war with Israel, although Lebanon's southern villages and towns and the predominantly Shiite suburbs of Beirut sustained heavy damage.

Opponents of Assad's regime say Syria's embattled president has maintained his influence in Lebanon through allies such as Hezbollah.

Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising, Hezbollah has sought to distance itself from the turmoil in Syria, although there have been allegations that the group has sent fighters to help Assad's regime fight rebels. Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, has not publicly sanctioned any operations in support of Assad, and warned the mayhem in the neighboring country was out of the group's control.

___

TROOPS ON THE GROUND: Lebanon's 15-year civil war ended in 1990 with Syrian forces defeating opponents, controlling large parts of the country and installing allied governments in Beirut. Syrian forces moved into Lebanon in 1976 as peacekeepers after the country got engulfed in civil war between Christian and Muslim militias.

Syrians were drawn into the conflict, and clashed with the Israeli troops after the 1982 invasion aimed at driving out Palestinian guerrillas. In 2000, Bashar Assad became president of Syria, succeeding his late father, Hafez Assad. Israel withdrew from South Lebanon, increasing pressure on Syria to leave. Syrian troops pulled out five years later, after sweeping street protests following Hariri's assassination. Many in Lebanon and its Western-backers blamed Syria for the killing. Damascus has denied involvement.

President Obama offers Jay-Z parenting advice

By Rolling Stone

President Barack Obama told?Cleveland radio station Z107.9 this week that he's offered a few tips to new dad Jay-Z?about riasing daughter Ivy Blue with?Beyonc?.

"I've gotten to know these guys over the last several years ... They're good people. Beyonc? could not be sweeter to Michelle and the girls. ... So they're good friends," the president says around the 6:33 mark of the clip. "They really are down-to-earth folks. And we talk about the same things I talk about with all my friends."

A big topic of discussion? Kids. "They've got a new daughter. I made sure Jay-Z was helping Beyonc? out and not leaving it all to mom and the mother-in-law," Obama said. Being a president or a rap mogul might be a tough job, but being a parent can humble even the best.

What to Do if Your Cellphone or Laptop Gets Lost or Stolen

Losing your cellphone or laptop can be as bad as losing your wallet. In some cases, it?s worse.

If someone has your cellphone they can access your apps, which may hold your bank account information, plus your communications via email, text and voicemail. Your laptop probably contains equally personal information ? tax forms, emails, accounts you can automatically sign into. These are frustrating scenarios. Luckily, there are a number of apps and software programs that can track your stolen or lost devices, and in some cases offer a kill switch-type feature for your data.

Find My iPhone and Android Lost are two popular apps that help you locate your phone and let you erase all data remotely once you?ve decided searching for it is a lost cause.

SEE ALSO: How Do the Experts Recover Stolen Laptops?

But, really, finding your cellphone also depends on the whether or not local police can assist in your search. Having tracking software installed on your laptop or smartphone increases the chances that law enforcement will have a strong enough lead to intervene and also be successful in finding it.

On Sept. 14, Derrick Doba, from Mesa, Ariz., had a laptop stolen from his office during business hours. Doba filed a police report but, Doba says, local law enforcement said there was nothing they could do to help. Doba discovered that he could play detective by using the Carbonite software on his laptop to track the location of the computer. He found out where the alleged thief had used the laptop (Yuma, Arizona), and officers were able to intervene. The laptop was retrieved and returned to Doba and the suspect is now facing charges.

Sgt. Tony Landato of the Mesa Police Department tells Mashable that the PD will help find lost cellphones and laptops if the case is in their jurisdiction and ?especially if there was a workable lead.?

?The main battle with cases of this nature would be the reliability and accuracy of the app on the device,? he writes in an email message. ?Laws that govern search and seizure are very stringent and this is new technology that has yet to be argued in court. Specifically, how exact of a location can the app provide? How reliable is that? Does it rise to the level of probable cause to enter someone?s home or property? I have seen cases of this nature that lead to an apartment complex, but cannot distinguish exactly which apartment. These are the main factors investigators have to deal with as they proceed with a case wherein only this lead exists.?

Having said that, Landato also said that having tracking software has ?opened doors? in some cases.

SEE ALSO: Where and When Do Most People Lose Their Phones? [INFOGRAPHIC]

But would the same police response occur in larger cities? A spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department tells Mashable that they have numerous cases of cellphones being successfully retrieved by the PD after being stolen.

Officer Gordon Shyy, media relations unit of the San Francisco Police Department, tells Mashable when a victim reports a cellphone or laptop stolen, they ask if it has tracking capabilities.

?If the suspects that stole the electronic device turns it off, then we cannot track the device,? he said. ?If the device is on, and the victim is able to show the officer where the device is going, we will send officers to the area and attempt to locate the suspect and device.?

In the most recent case, a man was mugged at gunpoint for his cellphone, wallet and backpack in the Diamond Heights area of San Francisco. The thief then jumped into a waiting van. The victim had previously installed a tracking app on his phone and police were able to use it to track the criminals, still sitting inside their van, to another location in the city. The cellphone was retrieved and the suspects were both charged with second degree felonies.

So, it seems installing tracking software on your smartphone or laptop can give police a lead, and perhaps help to find your device.

Additional tracking software and apps:

  • Prey ? For Android smartphones and tablets, and Mac and Windows PCs. Once your laptop goes missing, mark it as ?missing? on the site and you can monitor where it is with Wi-Fi geolocation. It?ll also take a screenshot, in case it was stolen, so you can possibly catch a glimpse of the thief?s activity. If you lost your phone, use the SMS service to send a message to your phone with your email address so the phone can be returned if it?s found. The software is free, but you have to upgrade if you want to track more than one device and unlock other features.
  • LoJack for Laptops ? This software for Macs and PCs resists deletion ? a smart idea if your laptop gets stolen. It also sends forensic information to the police and the company?s theft department to help you to locate your laptop should it be stolen. And, if your computer is stolen and wiped clean, you can still get all your data from it.
  • LockItTight ? This software for Android and PCs will grab a screen shot of the thief?s activity. The basic service, which includes geo-tracking, is free, but if you want to use other features, you can upgrade to one of the three versions.
  • StealthGenie ? This potentially creepy software for Androids, iPhone and Blackberries, lives on your phone and operates in secret. It collects data about calls, texts and other activities, and sends that information to a secure web account. It also has real time geo-tracking and location history. The software costs $99.99 for the basic 12-month package. The ?gold? subscription costs $129.99 and lets you delete all sensitive information remotely and notify you if there?s been a SIM change.

Has your smartphone or laptop ever been lost or stolen? Did you recover it? If so, tell us how you did it in the comments.

Accessible Frank Lloyd Wright Home Added To Historic Register

The only fully-accessible home ever designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright is among the latest properties to be named to the National Register of Historic Places.

The U.S. Department of the Interior recently added the Laurent House in Rockford, Ill. to its list of historic places.

The home was designed by Wright in 1949 for Kenneth Laurent, who was paralyzed while serving in World War II. In addition to switches, built-in desks and other features and furnishings designed to accommodate an individual using a wheelchair, Wright crafted the house so that it?s beauty could be appreciated from a seated position.

Flag Football is Underway - Intramural Sports - Washington State ...

Intramural flag football is finally off and running with more than 203 teams signed up to play Sunday- Thursday.? We exceeded our goal of getting at least 200 teams and are motivated to get even more teams signed up next semester.? Usually flag football is intramurals biggest turnout and we are excited to see who will be crowned flag football champions.? Whether it is the recreational or competitive champions, whoever wins the championship will have a long road ahead of them to make it to the finals with such a great number of teams.

The football season started this past Sunday and there were already some good matchups to watch throughout the week.? Two teams that stood out to me on Sunday were McSwag and Team Glen Coco.? Both of these teams came ready to play and put on a show for the spectators that were watching their game.? Even though it was a close game, sportsmanship was still visible during the game, whether it was the other team grabbing the opposing team?s flag for them off the turf at Valley Road or simply helping them up off the ground.

These two teams set the stage for the start of the season as to how to play competitively but also staying classy.? Flag football will be a long and exhilarating season with many more competitive games to follow.????

On a side note, participants for flag football need to remember that shorts and pants with pockets are not allowed because of the risk of injuries that could occur from the opposing team getting their hand caught in the pocket.? Also, be sure to check your schedule online for what time you play and what colors your team will be that night.? It is never a bad idea to bring both black and white shirts just in case there is a misunderstanding on which team is which color.?

Lastly, good luck to all our participants and I encourage spectators to come on down to Valley Road Playfields, Rodgers or Martin Stadium any time during the week starting around 7:00pm to watch some flag football action.????

Go Cougs,

Kory
